Up To My Ears In Birdhouses!

I have been getting bored since Christmas. There is only so much you can do in Michigan in the middle of winter. I don’t ski, I don’t ice fish, I don’t tobaggan. I do like the snow though and I love Michigan. It is a great state.

In the winter I have to find things to keep me busy. The months between January-end of March are particularly nailbiting for me!

I have been collecting for the last 10 years, birdhouses. The kind that you don’t hang outside, but are purly decorative. You find them at store thoughout the midwest that cater to folk art, country decor. So I have about 20 of the life size birdhouses hanging around the house (not literally).

So I decided with my love of Polymer Clay, why not make miniatures of them! So I have been busy. Each one stand about 2″ high and 11/2″ deep. The width depends on the style of the house.

Ribbon Candy Ornaments

Ribbon Candy has always been a Holiday staple as far as I am concerned.  So this year when I found a way to make decorations out of polymer to look like ribbon candy, I couldn’t wait to try it.

I am using these on the tree, to decorate packages and a bowl of “fake” ones on the table in a candy dish.  I have no small children coming to my house, so I don’t have to watch for anyone wanting to eat them!

Last year around this time I was just starting my exploration of Polymer Clay. I knew from the start that this was something I would enjoy for years to come. One of my favorite aspects of clay is the miniature scenes, characters, and villages one can make. I like doing things in a small size.

I ran across this on my favorite Polymer Clay site Sculptey.com. The complete instructions for this and other crafts are there for both novices and experienced alike.

Happy Holidays!

Santa Penguin

projects_SantaPenguinMainPolymer Clay will not be left out of this holiday craft run.

This cute little guy was so easy to make, a child could do it. I am going to give you a link to a site that I use quite often for my ideas. Normally I would write down the instruction and then put them on here, but they have everything laid out so nice and simple. I figure it would be better just to send my readers there.

But be sure and come back for more ideas on holiday crafting right up until Santa time!

Happy Halloween!!!!!

It is cold and rainy here in Michigan; a typical Halloween day for the Midwest. I have been trying to find a fun recipe for cupcakes this morning and I ran across these.
halloween You are probably wondering what this have to do with crafting.

Look at this picture. These would be so easy to make out of Polymer Clay. All you would need is a small clay pot. You can purchase them at your craft store for pennies on the dollar. Then you would take the clay color of choice and drape them over the upside down pot. Add eyes, noses, hats, even card holders which can be made out of wire, and you have the perfect, inexpensive Halloween table decoration. You could even blend the clay to make varied color combination.

Why not carry this idea into the next season. Use the pot, some green clay and make a Christmas tree with ornaments. Oh! the ideas keep flowing!

Halloween Earrings

Since seasonal jewelry often has a whimsical sense of fun, try experimenting a little by mixing and matching. Here’s an example of what I’m talking about with these candy corn and pumpkin lampwork beads , which were used for making earrings for Halloween. Wear a matching pair or mix them up and wear one of each.

A friend found these earring and used 24 gauge round gold-filled wire that she curled on the end to form a wire coil head pin, then added the beads, and finished the top of the earrings by using the wire wrapped loop technique. Once the dangle part of the earrings were assembled, she just added a gold-filled ear hook.

Fun Summer Project for Kids

350x255_clay1_rdax_65This fun project can take on whatever look you want. Whether it’s a marbled design or one of more solid color, kids will have a blast putting them together.

What you’ll need:

*  Modeling clay: Red, yellow, blue  (Polymer Clay can be used for this project, just follow package instructions, or if you prefer use any modeling clay.)
* Wooden skewers
* Clear crafting lace, or your choice of material to string the beads.

How to make it:

1. Pinch off small pieces of modeling clay, one pinch from each color. Start with red and yellow and knead the together long enough for them to form a marbled effect.
2. Once you have the desired effect, roll the clay in your hands into a ball.
3. Slide the clay ball on to a wooden skewer, twisting as you go to create the hole in the bead.
4. Repeat this process for as many beads and as many color combinations as you like.
5. Let the beads dry on the skewer; be sure that they are spaced enough apart so that they are not touching each other.
6. Remove from skewer when dry, about 3-4 hours, and thread onto crafting lace. Tie and wear!

What Is He?

Is it a gnome or a troll?  I asked my son that very question when he made it.   I was told he is just a guy enjoying his fishing spot.   My son is laid off right now and is a little bored.   But I think he came out rather well; both my son and the figure

The fish in my pond have been nibbling at the bobber that was attached to his fishing pole.

Isn’t polymer clay great!
